I had a friend with a corgi that had surgery on a rear leg. Net Skip to content. Since the muscles are not being used, the body chooses to preserve resources and direct them towards areas of greater need. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would suggest taking him back to the vet to get that part fixed so it doesn't bother him. All posts and photos become the property of HandicappedPets. I would talk to the vet about the financial issue, i have never heard of the cast removal being extra.

Cast Removal When your pet's injury has healed, the cast will be removed with a saw or cutting wire that has been especially designed for this purpose. Cast.It would definitely be a good idea to have your dog properly examined by a vet so that you can be certain of the exact reason for the limp.

My question is this: How long after slpint/cast removal has it taken for your dogs to use the affected limb fully?I am just doing simple stuff--when I need to sort in tight spots, etc.

She sustained a hairline fracture on her back right leg at about 3 months old. The vet said she would need a cast for 4 weeks but removed it after. It is recommended to go a step further and confine your dog in a small area or crate to prevent your dog from over-working the injured region.

On rare occasions, it may be necessary to put the limb in a rigid cast; After your dog returns home, it is important to watch for signs of pain by.A dog may also lick its leg because canines have developed an instinct that tells them that licking may help to heal an injury faster.

We just have never removed a splint/cast. new surgery to reset it, put on a new cast, and the same cost later to remove the new cast.Swimming is good exercise, but not sure how good it would be for forcing a dog to use the leg on dry ground.Forum Dog after cast removal

At first I thought that the pressure sore, which looked rather painful, was causing her not to want to use the leg.

This means that after splint removal the injured region is likely to have less muscle than before, making it weaker than it originally was.

Note that there can be side effects to these drugs, so ensure it is safe to do so before giving any to your dog.

We are unsure how but 5 weeks ago she broke her front leg just directly between "knee and ankle" It was a clean break not a fracture with no skin break.

Since the pain can be unbearable when weight is put on the affected leg, it can make your dog rely on other limbs and create a limp as a result.

It had to have a pin instead of a splint and it took him over a month to build the leg back up again once the pin was removed.

Keep the cast as clean and dry as possible by covering it with a plastic bag whenever your pet goes outside in wet weather.

If it was bad enough to put a cast on it then I'm guessing it was really bad because most vets will do what they can to avoid having to cast.
